National Summit On Interpersonal Violence and Abuse Across the Lifespan:
Forging a Shared Agenda

 2010 SUMMIT PROPOSALS
Submission Guidelines

We are accepting proposals for symposia, workshops, individual papers, and posters.  Acceptable proposals may address theory, research, and/or practice issues related to interpersonal violence and focused on one or more of the conference threads.  Symposia will be 90 minutes, and papers should be 20-25 minutes.  Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference and may be either a half day or a full day (3 or 6 hours)

Types of Proposals:

Symposia - A symposia should consist of a chairperson who would provide a brief introduction to the theme of the symposium, followed by 3 or 4 presenters, and a question-answer period.  The symposium may end with a discussant.  Symposia should be focused on one or more of the conference threads, and preference will be given to highly rated symposia that span and integrate two or more threads.

Papers - A paper presentation is an oral presentation approximately 20-25 minutes in length, focusing on current research or practice.  Papers selected for presentation will be grouped with other similar papers to form cohesive paper session.  Papers not selected for presentation will automatically be considered for a poster presentation unless the author specifically declines.

Poster Presentations – A poster presentation provides the opportunity for presenters to share research findings, new ideas, innovations, programs, and advances in the profession with as many summit attendees as possible.  The Poster session allows presenters and attendees to engage in extended discussions about the author’s presentation that is in illustrated format on a poster board.  Posters are welcomed from researchers, practitioners, policy makers, advocates, and students.  If your submission is accepted for presentation in a poster session, you will be sent detailed instructions to assist you in preparing your materials in the required format. (Deadline for poster presentation proposals is November 30, 2009)

Workshops - A workshop is a half-day (2-3 hours) or a full day (4-6 hours) program based on teaching direct skills and application of theory or research to workshop participants.  Workshops combine theoretical and experiential approaches, and should be evidence-based or have a sound foundation.  Leaders typically offer practical experience to help participants increase their understanding and skills in a particular area of current interest in interpersonal violence research, intervention, prevention, or policy.

All proposals must adhere to the following guidelines:

      1. Titles of symposia, workshops, paper, or posters should be 12 words or less.
      2. Identify submissions as either “symposium”, “workshop”, "paper", or “poster.”
      3. Poster submissions should include a 300 word summary.  The text of the summary should include a statement of the research problem, subjects used, procedure, results, and conclusions; if it is a program, then the description of the issues covered, the foundation or evidence or support for it, and the techniques to be presented.
      4. Paper submissions should include a 300 word summary, three (3) learning objectives, and a brief biosketch or vita of the presenting author for the purposes of CE credit.
